Severud Associates Promotions

The experienced and expert engineering staff at Severud Associates is our most important asset. Therefore, we are proud to announce the following promotions:  Mohamed Arafa and Muhammad T. Rahal have been elevated to the level of Senior Associate; and Alexander H. Azero, Phillip R. Bellis, Stacey N. Hursen, Daniel Ki, and Kevin C. Norton, have progressed to the position of Senior Engineer.

Senior Associate

Mohamed Arafa began his career in his native Egypt as an engineer and assistant lecturer at Cairo University. After coming to the U.S. and completing his doctoral studies, Mohamed joined Severud Associates in 2007. Mohamed applies his extensive technical expertise to analyze and design complex buildings such as NYU’s 181 Mercer Street and One Vanderbilt Avenue, one of the tallest office buildings in New York City. Mohamed further contributes to the structural engineering profession by teaching at Rutgers University as a part-time lecturer.

Muhammad T. Rahal joined Severud Associates in 2002 as an engineer. In the next six years, he received his master’s degree and progressed to senior engineer and associate. Muhammad’s condition survey and field experience has made him particularly expert in building additions and alterations and renovations of existing structures. Muhammad has contributed to significant projects that include the mixed-use 851 Avenue of the Americas, the 35XV Condo, and renovation of the former New York Times building, all in New York City.

Senior Engineers

Alexander H. Azero has gained experience with major renovations and additions, including the Moynihan Station–James A. Farley Post Office redevelopment and the expansion of the Museum of Modern Art, both in Manhattan. Phillip R. Bellis has used parametric design to optimize the structural systems of several large-scale projects, including the MSG Sphere at the Venetian in Las Vegas, and is active with SEAoNY, the ACE Mentor Program, and CANstruction. Stacey N. Hursen has worked on several mixed-use developments and renovations, such as TSX Broadway in Manhattan, which includes the relocation and restoration of the landmarked Palace Theater. Daniel Ki has contributed to the design of several major residential projects, such as 100 Vandam Street in Manhattan and 1425 Hudson Street at Hudson Tea in Hoboken, NJ, and is editor-in-chief of the SEAoNY newsletter. Kevin C. Norton has worked on all stages of mega-projects such as New York University’s mixed-use 181 Mercer Street and the MSG Sphere, an entertainment venue in Las Vegas, Nevada. Alexander has been with Severud Associates for five years; the other senior engineers have been with the firm for four years.

These talented engineers, along with their colleagues, will keep Severud Associates at the forefront of the structural engineering profession, using best practices for innovation, economy, and safety in their designs and providing engaged service to clients.
