Severud’s Structural Engineering Expertise
Severud Associates served as structural engineer of record for the iconic 20 Times Square development, a 41-story marvel located at the northeastern edge of Times Square.
Designing a Column-Free Retail and Entertainment Haven
Severud designed the building’s seven-story steel-framed podium to house a vibrant mix of retail and entertainment spaces. To create an immersive and unobstructed experience for visitors, Severud engineered 60-foot clear spans, achieving nearly column-free spaces that maximize flexibility and visual appeal. This engineering feat allows retailers and entertainment venues to showcase their offerings in a dynamic and engaging way.
Seamless Transition: Supporting a Towering Concrete Hotel
Atop the podium, Severud designed a floor-deep steel platform that seamlessly transfers all vertical and lateral loads from the 35-story concrete hotel tower to the building’s perimeter. This innovative solution not only ensures the structural integrity of the tower but also allows for a visually striking transition between the podium and the hotel, as well as a wall-free and column free area in the podium.
The 20 Times Square project highlights Severud Associates’ ability to deliver innovative and efficient structural solutions for complex mixed-use developments.
