Adapting to the unique demands of an aging structure and a busy urban location, Severud Associates approached the CFG Bank Arena redevelopment with a focus on modernizing the facility while respecting its historic roots. This $250 million project required thoughtful structural solutions to improve the arena’s functionality, ensuring it meets today’s standards for accessibility, sustainability, and community engagement.

A Strategic Structural Undertaking

The CFG Bank Arena redevelopment focused on significant renovations, including expanding seating capacity, upgrading amenities, and integrating modern technology, all while maintaining the historic integrity of the arena.

Preserving a Legacy, Addressing Modern Needs

CFG Bank Arena, formerly known as the Baltimore Arena, has been a staple in the city since its opening in 1962. As a cornerstone for sports and entertainment, it required a unique approach to renovation that respected its legacy while meeting contemporary demands. Severud’s engineers undertook the challenge of enhancing the arena’s structural integrity and operational efficiency without compromising its iconic status.

CFG Arena Stage

A Dynamic Structural Solution

One of the standout features of the CFG Bank Arena redevelopment was the reinforcement of the existing structure. Severud engineers conducted a comprehensive analysis of the original framework to identify areas needing enhancement. This included upgrading the steel and concrete components to accommodate the new seating layouts and increased load requirements.

The arena also required a more open stage, which was achieved by removing existing bearing walls and reinforcing the long-span roof framing through the installation of new trusses, columns, and piles; hydraulic jacks were used to preload the trusses, ensuring controlled deflections and stability throughout process.

Seating and Accessibility Enhancements

To improve functionality and accommodate modern shows, the redevelopment project introduced several structural improvements, including additional loading bays and enhanced stage access. The expanded stage and better backstage infrastructure align the arena with the requirements of large-scale performances. Accessibility was also improved with widened concourses and better flow throughout the venue. This also included a new terrace to enhance visitor experience.

Integrating Sustainability with Structural Integrity

The CFG Bank Arena project retained a significant portion of the original structure, reflecting Severud’s commitment to sustainable design. By preserving much of the existing framework, the redevelopment minimized the environmental impact, reducing material waste and the need for new construction. These measures align with broader goals of promoting environmentally responsible urban development while modernizing the facility for future use.

CFG Bank Arena

A Hub for Community Engagement

In addition to its role as a sports and entertainment venue, CFG Bank Arena remains an integral part of the Baltimore community. The redevelopment improved the venue’s flexibility to host a variety of events, including concerts and cultural gatherings, ensuring that the arena serves as a multifunctional space for the local community.

Unified Efforts in Engineering

The CFG Bank Arena redevelopment by Severud Associates relied on effective collaboration between design and construction teams. Given the arena’s urban location and the need to maintain operations during renovations, strategic collaboration was crucial. It helped the team navigate the complexities of the project, ensuring the successful completion of the arena upgrade on time and within budget.
