Transforming a Historic Transit Hub

Severud Associates played a key role in revitalizing the AirTrain JFK – Jamaica Station, a project that blends historic preservation with modern transportation infrastructure.

Integrating New and Old

The Severud team was tasked with designing several key components of the station, including a vertical circulation building (VCB) and Train Control Center Building (TCCB), a new entry portal roof and mezzanine bridge over the LIRR tracks, the new Westerly Bridge over the tracks and an expanded NYCT subway station mezzanine. These additions were carefully integrated with the renovation and restoration of the historic 1913 LIRR Jamaica Station, creating a unified and efficient transit hub for the 21st century.

Modern Design Meets Functionality: The VCB

The VCB, a six-story structure clad in precast panels and glass, is a striking addition to the station. It houses a spacious atrium with stairs, escalators, and elevators, providing seamless access to the AirTrain, LIRR, and subway platforms. The building’s modern design not only enhances the passenger experience but also complements the historic character of the original station.

The AirTrain JFK – Jamaica Station project exemplifies Severud Associates’ ability to integrate modern design and engineering solutions with historic preservation.
